My practice evokes intimate feelings and fragile situations that are the result of me existing in two cultures, Latin and American. As a cathartic act I explore a personal stage of being. The journey of being a Latin woman and Resident Alien drives me and has led me to study the process of my adaptation to new environments. For example, my feminine aspects are highlighted through the use of my body as a material that becomes affected with functional sculptures that I create for various reasons. Being from a family of tailors as well as my experience as a teacher have guided me in my application of performance, video and textiles in my work. In addiction to theses mediums/processes, I use other materials like electronics and found objects that are often combined with traditional art techniques such as drawing and photography.
"My work has two main directions: emotional prosthetics and the cliché of the "exotic" Latin woman".
Emotional Prosthesis: By creating "emotional" prosthetics I am able to examine situations and emotions that occur in everyday life. The result is a body of work that is self-reflective. A feature of of this work is my experience as an immigrant. This situation often creates fear and comical circumstances that I fix with pieces that supply or satisfy a need. Functionality becomes a material and medium that allows my work to exist between art, design, performance and sculpture.
Es rred "The cliche of the exotic Latin woman" The other direction of my work investigates different aspects of the cliché of the "exotic" Latin woman. The investigation takes place through actions that explore sensuality and romance. It retains a personal aspect by the use of elements related to Colombian traditions that I grew up with and my questions about my identity as a Latin woman. "Through my work I create ironic and comical links between two cultures. Communication and sounds, feminine and identity, protection and adaptation become part of my investigation".
